What it's Like to See a Total Solar Eclipse

Total Solar Eclipse 2024 We traveled east along the path of totality to watch a total solar eclipse. The experience left a lasting memory, and I know this won't be our last! I used a small telescope (RedCat 61) and my Canon EOS Ra to take a video of the entire eclipse, and Ash used her Canon EOS R with a telephoto lens (Canon EF 400mm F/5.6) to capture photos. Thank you for watching!

A total solar eclipse is the ultimate celestial event. For a brief period, the moon will pass directly in front of the sun, covering it completely. For a lot of people, this is a life-changing moment. ...

My Dob is the Orion 10" with push-to system. It works well once you figure it out and pick up a few tips. It comes apart within seconds and each piece is about 35 pounds, so it is manageable by one person. "Commitment" is a good word for anything bigger.

I have a canon 60d and a Vortex Viper 20-60 X85 spotting scope, and a Novagrade adapter. I would like to take great shots of the moon and anything else I can see, but can't seem to get the right camera settings. My aperture show F0.0. I was told that means no lens. How do I tell my camera I'm using a spotting scope and will focus the scope instead of a lens?

One mystery to me...why the ASI120MM mini is almost always slid nearly out to achieve focus. Its like the guide scopes are a mis-match. I've used the mini on several guide scopes and they all act the same.

Cracking piece Trevor. Really enjoyed this. I noticed that you put two separate power leads into your rig. One into ASIAIR and one into the AM3. Can I ask if you think this is a better option of power distribution. I’m using the AM5 and ASIAIR combo and although I’ve only had one run out so far, my recollection is that I plugged the mount into mains power supply, and the ASIAIR was powered using a cable that ran from the mount. Kind of a short cable supplying power between the AM5 and ASIAIR. I’m wondering if it’s much the same from an equipment performance point of view or if in your experience having to different sources is a better option 👍☘️🇨🇦

Is there a solution to avoid to break the diagonal, the eyepiece or the phone if the ota is near the zenith ? Problem is the same with the star sense align because you do not contrôle the ota Is it necessary to remove the diagonal ? I ask because I bought a best and larger diagonal and screw the ota at his extremity is not enough

I tried Rho from southern Ohio (John Glenn Astronomy Park) multiple times and its still too low on the horizon for it to be worth it with my color camera without getting dozens of hours. I won't try it again until I get somewhere farther south, higher elevation, and true dark skies. I don't know why people so much father north go for it or how they pull it off as well as you did with such a limited total exposure time. That and the turbulence in the atmosphere always hindered my images making everything flicker so much it was no longer very sharp. Though I wouldn't say it gets all that dark in a Bortle 3 or 4, there is still more than enough light pollution bouncing around to not need to use headlamps to get around at the local astro park on the border of a 3 and 4.

When I use my ASIAIR mini I use it's 12v power output port to power my AM3. Why did you choose to power your AM3 independently instead of through the ASIAIR 12v output? The volts and amps are in spec and if the ASIAIR dies you've lost your imagine session either way.

Light pollution is really heartbreaking. That wasteful, ugly glow over cities and their rapidly spreading dome of light is a miserable replacement for awesome bright star nights. Here in northeast Nevada we are blessed with Bortle 3-4 backyards, and Bortle 2 and Bortle 1 within thirty minute, and one hour drive times, respectively. Those really dark skies are shockingly beautiful and disorienting. There are so many brights stars, you have to take a few minutes to trace out constellations and get re-oriented. Just sitting in a camp chair gazing at the sky is like an altered state of consciousness (without the drugs ;). If you get a chance, the Oregon Star Party is an amazing event.

Image came out really nice. I have this target on my list but nights are super short and I would have to go somewhere with really nice south view. No chance to see this from my backyard. May I just ask why did you use ASI 2400MC PRO? I'd really love this camera with my C9.25 because of big pixels. But with my/your RedCat 51 that leads to significant under-sampling which for me is quite an issue even with 533MC pro on RedCat.

Hey a tip for those assembled astro rigs- I like to use plastic tubs like you get at Walmart. My favorites are the clear ones with colored lid that have handles molded into the tub and lid. I usually get a few pieces of open cell foam in the sewing section to pad the bottom. (My HEQ5 mount fits nicely in one that is rugged enough for this heavy stuff.) These make inexpensive, secure, and dust free cases to transport delicate equipment.

I've been following your channel for the past of 1,5-2 years, You, Nico, Alyn and Astrobiscuits inspired me to start my astrophotography journey. I like this video a lot. I like that its a bit longer than usual, and shows things you are not often showing, like how you set up your rig and other stuff like packing your gear before moving out to the location. It had a chill vibe, and I felt more connected and engaged. The usual "Here is my million$ rig consisting of this-this-and that, let me plop it outside my garage, poof, here are the results" kinda videos got slightly repetitive. But this one... this one is golden. Loved it.
